Review VIXEN F7.7 Super Dispersion Ed Fpl 53

The Vixen SD103SII F7.7 ED FPL-53 is an impressive astronomical refractor telescope designed for serious observers seeking high-quality, detailed views of celestial objects. This telescope boasts several advanced features that make it a favorite among astrophotographers and visual observers alike.

At its heart is a 103mm (4 inches) F7.7 triplet ED (Extra-low Dispersion) objective lens. The ED glass elements help minimize chromatic aberrations, ensuring that the images produced are free from color fringing. The F7.7 focal ratio offers a good balance between light gathering ability and image brightness, making it suitable for observing a wide range of celestial objects, from bright planets to deep-sky objects.

The telescope is housed in a robust, yet lightweight aluminum tube. It features a 2-inch (50.8mm) Crayford-style focuser with a 10:1 dual-speed focusing mechanism. This focuser allows for fine-tuning of the focus, enabling you to achieve the sharpest possible image. The telescope also comes with a 2-inch (50.8mm) eyepiece, providing a large, comfortable field of view.

The SD103SII includes a dew heater system, ensuring that the telescope remains clear of condensation during cold nighttime observations. This is a valuable feature for those who observe in humid or cold environments.

The telescope comes with a Vixen dovetail mounting bar, which can be attached to various mounts using Vixen's standard dovetail clamps. The telescope's compact size and weight (around 20 lbs or 9 kg) make it easily transportable, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy observing from different locations.

In summary, the Vixen SD103SII F7.7 ED FPL-53 is a high-performance astronomical refractor telescope that delivers stunning, detailed views of celestial objects. Its advanced features, including the ED triplet objective lens, robust aluminum tube, and Crayford-style dual-speed focuser, make it a popular choice among serious observers and astrophotographers. The inclusion of a dew heater system and Vixen dovetail mounting bar further enhance its versatility and convenience.

The Vixen SD103SII F7.7 Dispersion ED FPL-53 is a compact, high-performance refractor telescope designed for astrophotography and visual observing. Here are some pros and cons that may help you decide if this telescope is the right choice for your needs.

Pros:

1. High Quality Optics: The telescope features a 103mm (4 inches) F7.7 refractor objective lens with ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements that help reduce chromatic aberration, providing sharper and clearer images.

2. Compact Design: The telescope has a compact size, making it easy to transport and set up, especially for those who may not have a large observing site or a dedicated observatory.

3. Versatile: The telescope can be used for both visual observing and astrophotography, making it a great choice for those who enjoy both hobbies.

4. Wide Field of View: The telescope has a wide field of view, making it ideal for observing large areas of the night sky, such as constellations, galaxies, and star clusters.

5. Easy to Use: The telescope is relatively easy to use, especially for those who are new to astronomy or telescopes.

Cons:

1. Limited Magnification: Due to its compact size, the telescope has a limited magnification capability, making it less suitable for observing planets or other high-powered targets.

2. Expensive: The telescope is relatively expensive compared to other telescopes in its class, especially considering the compact size.

3. Requires a Stable Mount: To get the best results from the telescope, especially for astrophotography, it requires a stable mount to minimize vibrations and tracking errors.

4. Limited Aperture: The telescope has a relatively small aperture, which means it may not gather as much light as larger telescopes, making it less suitable for observing faint objects or very deep sky imaging.

Conclusion:

The Vixen SD103SII F7.7 Dispersion ED FPL-53 is a high-quality, compact refractor telescope that is ideal for those who enjoy wide-field observing and astrophotography. Its high-performance optics, versatility, and compact design make it a great choice for those who are limited on space or budget. However, its limited magnification capability, expensive price tag, and requirement for a stable mount are important considerations that may make it less suitable for some users.

Recommendation:

If you are looking for a high-performance, compact telescope for wide-field observing and astrophotography, the Vixen SD103SII F7.7 Dispersion ED FPL-53 is an excellent choice. However, if you are looking for a telescope with a higher magnification capability, a larger aperture, or a more affordable price point, you may want to consider other options. Ultimately, the decision on which telescope to buy depends on your specific observing and imaging goals, as well as your budget and available resources.

Details:

It is solid and can be easily removed by unscrewing the flange to access mounting screws. They even eliminated the three spacers around edges of lens, choosing rather to substitute a continuous spacer prevent any diffraction effects. The telescope is in great condition lightly used and treated very well indeed. I replaced the stock focuser with a TPO same as GSO dual speed 2 Crawford.

The TPO was not threaded to attach the telescope however it fit in opening perfectly so I attached from inside tube flange with three screws around edge 120 degrees apart. The objective is very hard to photo due the coatings reflecting almost nothing. This is the latest model from Vixen and optical performance sterling. The original Vixen single speed focuses are not very good.

Selling for about half of new price. This is a Vixen super dispersion SD103SII ED FPL53 glass refractor telescope. The focuser is smooth and rotates as well.
