Review WILLIAM OPTICS Apochromatic Petzval Refractor Accessories

The William Optics RedCat 71 Apo Refractor, a Petzval design apochromatic telescope, is an exquisite instrument for those seeking a high-performance, compact and portable observing solution. This refractor stands out in the market due to its advanced optical design and exceptional image quality.

The RedCat 71 is a 71mm (2.8 inches) aperture telescope, offering a focal length of 300mm (11.8 inches) and a focal ratio of f/4.13. Its apochromatic design features three high-quality, extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements, which effectively minimize chromatic aberrations, ensuring the delivery of sharp and vivid images. Moreover, the Petzval design of this refractor provides an almost perfect correction of coma, ensuring excellent image quality even at the edges of the field of view.

Constructed with a robust and lightweight carbon fiber tube, this telescope is both portable and durable. Its 2-inch Crayford-style focuser provides a generous 12:1 reduction ratio, enabling fine adjustments and precise focusing. Additionally, the telescope comes with a 2-inch focal reducer, extending its effective focal length to 600mm (23.6 inches) and broadening the possibilities for astrophotography and deep-sky observation.

The RedCat 71 Apo Refractor also includes a 1.25-inch diagonal, a 25mm eyepiece, and a 5x24 finderscope. Its compact size, weighing only 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg), makes it an excellent choice for travel and observing on the go. The telescope can be mounted on various mounts, including equatorial and alt-azimuth mounts, offering flexibility for various observing styles and applications.

In conclusion, the William Optics RedCat 71 Apo Refractor is an ideal solution for astrophotographers and visual observers seeking a high-performance, portable telescope. Its advanced optical design, excellent image quality, and robust yet lightweight construction make it a standout choice for both beginners and experienced astronomers.

The William Optics RedCat 71 apochromatic Petzval refractor is a compact and portable telescope that is popular among astrophotographers and visual observers due to its excellent image quality and unique design. Here are some pros and cons of buying this telescope:

Pros:

1. High Image Quality: The RedCat 71 is an apochromatic refractor, which means it corrects for chromatic aberration and provides sharp and clear images. Its short focal length also results in a wide field of view, making it great for observing large areas of the night sky.

2. Compact and Portable: With a length of only 12.6 inches and a weight of just 4.4 pounds, the RedCat 71 is highly portable and easy to transport. It can be used in a variety of locations, including dark sky sites and urban areas.

3. Versatile: The RedCat 71 can be used for both visual observing and astrophotography. It is also compatible with various imaging cameras and accessories, making it a versatile option for those who want to explore both areas.

4. Affordable: Compared to other high-quality apochromatic refractors, the RedCat 71 is relatively affordable, making it a great option for those with a budget.

Cons:

1. Limited Aperture: With a diameter of only 71mm, the RedCat 71 has a limited aperture, which means it may not gather as much light as larger telescopes. This can make it more difficult to observe faint objects or stars.

2. Requires Careful Collimation: Due to its unique Petzval design, the RedCat 71 requires careful collimation to ensure accurate alignment and optimal image quality. This can be time-consuming and may require some experience.

3. Limited Focal Length: With a focal length of only 420mm, the RedCat 71 may not provide enough magnification for some observations. This can be addressed with the use of Barlow lenses or other accessories, but may add to the overall cost.

In conclusion, the William Optics RedCat 71 apochromatic Petzval refractor is a great option for those who want a high-quality, portable telescope that can be used for both visual observing and astrophotography. Its unique design provides excellent image quality, but it may require some care and experience to use optimally. While it has some limitations, such as a limited aperture and focal length, these can be addressed with the use of accessories. Overall, the RedCat 71 is a versatile and affordable option for those who want to explore the night sky in detail.

Recommendation: If you are looking for a portable, high-quality telescope that can be used for both visual observing and astrophotography, the William Optics RedCat 71 apochromatic Petzval refractor is a great option to consider. It may require some care and experience to use optimally, but its excellent image quality and versatility make it well worth the investment.

Details:

My example photographs are using a ZWO ASI585MC Pro and an ASI533MC. Shortly after purchasing this two years ago, I installed the Deposited kit for ZWO electronic automatic focused EAF, risers are machine aluminum, not 3D printed. It also comes with the William Optics Uni Guide scope a ZWO helical focused attached. I was admittedly a little bit OCD and had to have spare, but the original has functioned perfectly.

Both the telescope and guide scope have Denote anti-dew heater strips on them; not pictured is a Y-type DC-to-RCA adapter that provides power from unit or computer, such as ZWO ASIAIR units. Note that the EAF has a temperature sensor plugged in. This is a Williams Optics RedCat 71 apochromatic Petzval-type refractor.
